GUIDE TO PERFECTING SHOE TIE

How To Tie Shoes

How To Tie Your Shoes The Right Way – Yes, You Did It Wrong All Your Life

If you are like me, you learned how to tie your shoes at a very young age, and you have been doing it the same way ever since, without giving it much thought. However, when I was wearing shoes, I noticed that the knot would always look lopsided after a few hours, and when I walked a bit, the knot would often come undone.
Now, I experimented with various double knots and other ways but the added bulk never let the knot look more elegant but just bulkier and it would still twist.
Then, I noticed my bow ties and how they would remain straight all day. The key to making this same principle work for my shoes was very simple, and in today’s video I show you exactly how you can tie your shoes by making just one little change. I did it wrong all my life and chances are you did too.
However, tying your shoes this way will tighten your knot over the day so it won’t loosen up, and it will remain straight and elegant.
Transcript:
Welcome to the Gentleman’s Gazette! In today’s video, we’re going to talk about tying your shoelaces the way you did in kindergarten. First of all, you need the right shoelaces. You’ll want thin, cotton laces. Don’t go with nylon, they may be good for tennis shoes but not for Oxfords.
If you’re interested in getting high-quality shoelaces, such as these, round and flat in 15 different colors, click here.
If you’re like me, you probably learned to tie your shoes in a way, and you learned it at a very young age and you never thought about it because it worked. So the traditional way of tying your shoes is having the knot, and then you form the loop, you go once around, and you pull it through. Now, that’s actually similar to a bow tie and when you look at it more closely, you can see that it’s slightly angled from left to right, and when you actually pull on the outside of the shoe, you can see how the entire knot points up and down rather than left to right.

The Better Way To Tie Your Shoes

The better way to tie your shoes is to start with the same knot, you form the loop with your right hand but instead of going this way, you now just go the other way and form the loop. Now, it may seem like this is exactly the same thing as it is before but look at the result, it goes from left to right and if you pull on your shoe, actually what happens is it tightens your knot, it doesn’t loosen it and the knot stays in place. This means you won’t have to tie your shoes anymore because when you actually move every time your knot gets tighter and secondly, it just looks very nice because it stays in the same shape from left to right. So with this simple life hack, you not only create a better-looking result but you also have shoelaces that are tight more purposefully and last longer.

SPRING SPENDING IS OFF

The Melbourne Cup is hailed as the race that stops a nation. The spring racing carnival itself could just as easily be seen as the event that kick-starts fashion spending in the southern states.
The numbers alone are astonishing. An economic impact statement was commissioned for last year's Melbourne Cup Carnival and found that the event contributed $374.2 million of economic benefit to the state of Victoria. Of that, $31.4 million was splashed on fashion items to wear to Flemington for the races, including 75,000 hats and fascinators, 61,000 dresses, 59,000 pairs of shoes and 30,000 handbags.
When you take into account the influx of interstate visitors – just the cruise ships from Carnival Australia and P&O will carry 8500 well-heeled guests from Sydney and Brisbane for the year's carnival –  and the national figure is even higher.

Fascinating figures

"The Melbourne Cup Carnival is our original major event and is incredibly important to the economy," says VRC chief executive Simon Love. "It transcends most of our nation's favourite pastimes of sport, culture, food and wine, fashion and a good time."
But what makes this year's data more interesting is the continued rise of male spending. Where once Fashions In The Field was an exclusively female domain, men are now coming to the party.
We have seen the growth of the carnival every year we have been in business

The data reveals that men bought 15,000 new suits and 17,000 shirts to wear to the races last Melbourne Cup Carnival. Apart from a wedding or a job interview, going to the races ranks as a major impetus for Australian men to to go and buy a new suit.

According to Sydney-based advisor Retail Doctor Group, worldwide sales of men's fashion have risen by 70 per cent in the past 17 years. Retail Doctor'sBrian Walker told Fairfax media that men were getting into fashion at a younger age than previous generations.
"Men are much more interested in the way they look today and they want to make a statement about their individual style," Mr Walker says.
Chris Edwards, the founder of Melbourne-based tailor Oscar Hunt, agrees. "There is no doubt the core business for tailors such as us, who make each suit to measure, is for weddings, but we have seen the growth of the carnival every year we have been in business," Edwards says. "It's now a significant time of year for us."

Hey, big spenders

With more than $30 million of spending on offer, little wonder the big retailers are out in force for the races, to try and get their cut. As a result, signage for the Myer and David Jones brands will be ubiquitous at race courses for the next month.
David Jones is hosting a marquee at the Caulfield Cup this Saturday, where corporate Australia and key customers will rub shoulders with celebrities and fashionistas. Rival Myer has the monopoly on the Melbourne Cup Carnival in November, where it has a marquee in the Birdcage and another two-year option on the Fashions In The Field contest after this year's carnival.
But when you drill down into the numbers, it seems the big retailers are no longer dominating the fashion spend. "When I was there we knew from the data that customer spending was across the board, from the big retailers to small boutiques and shops," says a former member of Myer's marketing team.
Myer's high-profile marquee in the Birdcage attracts corporate clients and fashion leaders.

"There was actually an argument that spending to sponsor the carnival wasn't getting a good bang for your buck. People love going to the races and will spend anyway. Some of that money will walk in your door, some will walk though someone else's. Small boutiques don't sponsor the races, but they also get a massive boost out of the carnival. If anything, they do better, because people treat themselves to something special, something designer or unique, at this time of year. Not an off the rack dress from a department store."

Bricks and mortar

The woes of the department store sector have long been blamed on the rise of online shopping. That theory, of course, has played out in the numbers, and in some recent turns of events.
David Jones has churned through another CEO this month, when Iain Nairn was shown the door. Nairn was due to host the marquee at Caulfield this Saturday. His name even appears on the invitations, sent out the week he departed. But such is the tumultuous world of department stores, nothing is certain.
The story at Myer is just as grim. Richard Umbers replaced Bernie Brookes as chief executive earlier this year, and could close as many as 13 underperforming stores.
But the language has barely changed, and there is always a new strategy on the horizon.
The five-year turnaround plan at Myer now includes being more relevant to "high-value customers". It's a message many have heard before. Back in 2010, Brookes announced that Myer would add one million extra staff hours to boost service, especially in fashion sections.
The additional man hours were budgeted to cost $20 million, but never eventuated.

Man power

While the department stores struggle, not all in the bricks and mortar world are closing down or cutting back as a result of online sales, especially in the world of men's fashion.
Family-owned chain Peter Jackson this month flagged plans to open 50 new stores on the eastern seaboard. Melbourne-based tailor Oscar Hunt opened its first Sydney outlet this month, just in time for Sydney clients to get their suits for the Melbourne races.
The entire Oscar Hunt business model is based on bricks and mortar, rather than online sales. The tailor's Melbourne store features a whisky bar and two fitting rooms. Customers come in for a minimum of three fittings, and it takes roughly six weeks for a made-to-measure suit to be completed, with the bulk of the tailoring done overseas.
It's that high-level of service that attract clients to operators such as Oscar Hunt. "You book your fitting with us, and you are shown to a private room," says Edwards. "We go through all the options with you, and you come back twice again to make sure that suit fits perfectly. It's a level of service department stores just can't offer."
A perfect-fitting suit, from Italian cloth, can cost as little as $750 – not much more than many off-the-rack-suits at DJs or Myer. "We not only have a sustainable business model, we have a growing business model," says Edwards. "We have a new store in Sydney and our customer base is expanding. People want customer service and they want quality. There has also been a swing back to men appreciating a suit that fits properly. They know it will last."

5 CLOTHING BEHAVIOUR CHOICES TO MAKE YOU MORE APPROACHABLE

 How-Clothing-and-Behavior-Affects-Approachability
How To Win Friends And Influence People.

A classic bestselling book.
Why is this book so popular?
Because we are social beings.
We have a deep desire to connect with other people.
But our thoughts, patterns and often, shyness disrupts the smooth flow of building relationships. Especially when it comes to getting to know strangers.
How do you overcome this bias and make yourself more approachable?
How do you make it easy for people to approach you?
The findings are especially relevant if you are employed in a job that requires people to feel comfortable asking you for help.

The Experiment – How Librarians Can Be Approachable And Helpful

A group of researchers sought to uncover some factors that influenceapproachability in the field of library science. The research was conducted by a couple of  library researchers.
The premise of their experiment was – a librarian that doesn’t help people find what they’re looking for is a lousy librarian. They were trying to determine what would make it more likely for someone to ask a librarian for help.
Librarians work best when library patrons feel they can ask questions. A librarian that seems closed-off, cold, or otherwise unapproachable can’t help people. If people can’t get the help they need at a library, they’ll likely seek their information from other sources such as the internet, friends or online databases.
They noticed that in previous research, clothing color, facial expressions, and formal attire all influence how approachable a person seems.

Library

The researchers devised a study to test these factors on approachability…
  • The researchers got 48 photographs of hypothetical librarians  – people of various ethnicities, with various facial features, clothing, settings and both genders.
  • Based on input from a group of students, 12 images were shortlisted. The researchers ensures a diversity of ethnicities, ages, both genders, etc.
  • Half the selected photographs were male subjects, half were female.
  • The age distribution was also even – half were young, the other half were older.
  • Out of the 12 shortlisted photographs – 4 were White, 4 African American, and 4 Asian.
Each image was digitally manipulated to display the following variety of characteristics:
  • Two photographs of the subject – a smiling version and a neutral version.
  • Photographs with and without a nametag.
  • A photograph with the subject in formal attire and the same person dressed in a plain shirt.
  • The same face looking down at a computer, looking at a book and making eye-contact with the viewer.
  • Three images of the subject dressed in a red, white and blue shirt.
No surprises – the researchers ended up with a HUGE number of photographs. There were 96 in total.
Then, the researchers got 1015 participants and divided them into two groups.
Each group got a random image from one of the image pairs (for instance: one group got a smiling version, some got a the neutral face) and the participants were given the following instructions:
Imagine you need to ask a librarian a question. Rate the approachability of this hypothetical librarian. 1 = least approachable, 10 = most approachable.

How To Improve Approachability – Results From The Experiment

The researchers compared the vast number of changed variables to see which factors mattered and in what ways to influence approachability.
The experimenters found the following factors increased a person’s approachability:

46177787921. Smile – Facial Expressions That Make You Look Friendly

This had the biggest impact of all factors. No matter what the librarian’s age, race, clothing, or behavior – smiling had a significant effect on the viewer.
Smiling improves approachability for everyone. The researchers found that smiling was the most powerful factor on approachability in the whole study.
A warm, inviting smile can put anyone at ease. It acts as a signal that you are open to an interaction. A fake smile, however, acts as a barrier. Make sure your eyes soften and your whole face breaks out in a wide smile.
Interactions with others are more enjoyable and easier when one or both people are smiling. A smile is contagious – making others feel better too and instantly making you more appealing and attractive.

Eye Contact 2. Direct Your Gaze Towards People

When a librarian had their nose in a book or was staring at a computer screen, they were seen as less approachable. This effect was the same for people of all ages, races and gender.
People are much more likely to approach you when you look directly at them, than when you turn away or avoid their gaze. Prolonged eye contact along with a smile can make all the difference to break the ice between strangers.
If you are uncomfortable making direct eye contact with strangers – look at the bridge of their nose between the eyes instead of directly into the eyes. It will appear as though you are making direct eye contact without adding to your discomfort.
Averting your eyes, fidgeting, avoiding direct eye contact or appearing distracted all decrease your approachability.

3. Accessories Help Facilitate Conversation

In the experiment, the researchers found that having a nametag increased librarians’ approachability.
This was the same across all types, but not to the same degree. For instance, nametags increased approachability for younger people way more than older people.
But still, no matter who the image depicted, they were seen as more approachable if they were wearing a nametag.
After spending over a year conducting research into the matter, Starbucks decided that all of their baristas should wear name tags.
Name Tag
WHY?
A nametag is an opening. You’re giving people an easy conversation-starter. They will feel like they already know something about you.
This improves approachability. So in certain professions, having a nametag may be an appropriate way to increase approachability. However, this isn’t going to apply to all professions. A presidential candidate probably shouldn’t wear a nametag to increase approachability, for instance.
What works better for most men is wearing interesting accessories. A heirloom watch, for instance, is a conversation starter. An interesting pair of cufflinks, a boutonniere on your suit lapel, colorful socks – any of these would add instant appeal to your outfit and create a hook for someone to start a conversation with you.

Wool Suit4. Formal Clothing Makes Men More Approachable

If you’re a young man, don’t be afraid to dress up and look professional, smart and appropriate.
However, “overdressing” as a young man will likely decrease your approachability. By contrast, older men significantly benefit from more formal clothing when it comes to approachability.
Formal clothing improved approachability for men, but worsened approachability for women.
Formal clothing improved approachability for older people (men and women), but worsened approachability for younger people (men and women).
The researchers suggested this bias was related to societal stereotypes about men and women and older versus younger people.
The takeaway here is that older people wearing formal clothing are seen as more approachable than younger people wearing formal clothing.

Men Chambray Shirt5. Choose Warm Colors For Your Clothing

To appear more approachable, try blue, and to a lesser extent, whiteAvoid red in your wardrobe.
Generally, blue was the most approachable color. It makes you appear trustworthy and reliable.
Red negatively impacted approachability across the board.
White was in-between. It was seen as l
ess approachable compared to blue, but more than red.
The negative impact of red may have been due to red’s perceived connection to dominance, aggression, and danger.
